Bhubaneswar: The Opposition Congress today raised issues including farmer suicides and drought condition in Odisha at the party’s third phase of Jagran Yatra in Salipr of Cuttack district.

Leading attack on the ruling BJD while addressing a gathering, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Prasad Harichandan said, “There is a wave of frustration against the government which is responsible for the rising farmer suicide cases in Odisha. Besides it is also unable to handle the drought situation in the State.”

Harichandan said days were not far when the ruling party would loose its support base in the grassroots level.

Launching a scathing attack on BJD, Rajya Sabha MP Ranjib Biswal asked that the State government must release a white paper about the source of Rs 35,000 crore it announced as drought assistance for the farmers.

“The State government must clarify whether is it going to spend the amount from State exchequer or Centre’s drought relief package,” Biswal said.

Apart from farmer suicides and drought condition, price rise, irregularities in enrolment in NFSA (National Food Security Act) rolls were also highlighted prominently by the party in the rally and the meeting.

Among others former Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Ramakanta Mishra and AICC General Secretary BK Hariprasad were present on the occasion.

However BJD spokesperson refuted any wave of frustration against the party.

“PCC Chief was referring to drought situation in Western Odisha. We know there are problems and have already addressed them in our farmers’ rally in Sohela. The congress has lost the confidence of people,” Pratap Deb said.
