Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission on Thursday recommended identification of alternative site on the outskirts of Cuttack for cremation of COVID19-affected patients.

Besides, the order passed by the commission asked the district administration to take steps to ensure proper lighting and cleaning of the existing Sati Choura and Kalia Boda crematoriums in the city as well.

"So far as the cremation of bodies in multiple numbers are concerned which are done in very few cremation grounds at Cuttack, the issue of environmental impact on the persons living nearby areas are not being taken into consideration by the authorities. As measures to attend the environmental issues cannot be done overnight, we recommend the authorities to search out/identify an alternative area on the outskirts of the town for cremation of dead bodies of COVID19-affected patients with all facilities and proper lighting," commission's order read. Rapping the district administration for not covering the existing crematorium at Sati Choura, the Commission said, "Adequate space is not available when more than 4-5 bodies are cremated at a time. This is a bizarre scene exposed to the general public at the Sati Choura crematorium which is situated at one of the main roads of Cuttack city leading to Aswini Hospital, Eye Hospital and other Hospitals and CDA residential area. Apart from the heavy air pollution, it has psychological effect on the students and children passing through that road."

"Immediate steps should be taken to cover the site with a considerable height so that the scene of burning of corpses is not exposed to the general public. Covering the exposed site of crematorium facing towards main road of Sati Choura should be done within ten days of receipt of this order." the commission directed.
