Bhubaneswar: To further broaden its health services, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar has decided to open 10 new departments very soon.

Informing this to the media on Monday, Dr Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Director, AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, said with the opening of the 10 new departments, the institute will have a total of 39 departments.

“We had recently interviewed about 1200 candidates for 10 new departments of which 110 candidates have joined the institute. Of the 110 candidates, 2-3 candidates have been appointed as professors, 15 additional professors, 26 associate professors and 65 assistant professors,” he added.

He said Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Neurology, Gastrology, Hospital Management and Paediatrics are among the 10 new departments which would be opened very soon.

Mahapatra further said the Out Patient Department (OPD) of the institute was running in the ground floor and first floor. But, with the gradual rise in number of patients, the OPD has extended to the second floor to accommodate them.

He also informed that a new Gynic ward would be opened in the institute tomorrow while construction of two operation theatres would begin soon.

Referring to the accommodation of patients, Mahapatra said while the institute has about 400 beds, efforts are on to create 100 new beds by June this year.
