Jajpur: Two poachers were arrested on charges of killing a spotted deer in Odisha's Jajpur district, officials said on Thursday.
The arrested have been identified as Bira Tiria and Naren Birua of Upala village.
According to officials, a thirsty deer had wandered from the forest to Kanteijhar village in search of water on Monday. Finding the deer alone, Tiria and Birua chased the animal and killed it with bows and arrows.
Later, they took away the venison to sell it.
After getting the information, forest officials reached the spot and started a manhunt to arrest the accused.
They nabbed the duo yesterday while they were hiding in the nearby forest.
We have booked the duo under section 23, 38, 29 and 5 of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and the arrested persons are poachers, forester C.R. Rout said.
"We have also seized the bows and arrows used in the crime", he said.
