Flyovers or overpasses were constructed with the aim to prevent traffic congestion while ensuring the smooth and safe passage of vehicles. Initially, the idea was praised. However, soon the idea turned out to be a curse for urban areas. With the alarming rise in population, cities are running out of space. And, the giant concrete structures take up a substantial amount of space.

Excluding the underpasses beneath the flyovers, the rest of the spaces are left unused. While urban residents are struggling for public places, large unused spaces under the giant structures are either encroached upon by roadside vendors or homeless people. Whilst there is a serious crisis of parking space, playgrounds and other public-devoted places, the unused spaces could have never been used better than this.

The spaces under the flyovers have wonderful potential and can be useful for other purposes. This has been effectively realised in Navi Mumbai. Recently, a video surfaced on social media in which a young boy is seen streaming a video.

The video shows the space beneath a flyover where several children are playing cricket.

As the boy describes, while vehicles are plying over their heads on the flyover, they are playing without any fear. There is a dedicated basketball court and space for playing badminton. Moreover, to ensure the safety of the children, the area has been fenced with steel wire mesh. Even the courts are divided allowing more than one group of children to play different games.

The entire facility is open to all and can be accessed free of cost.

This impressive video has now gone viral on social media with several celebrities lauding the brilliant idea.

While Indian billionaire businessman and the chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra sharing the video wrote, “Transformational. Let’s do this. In every city,” Bollywood filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri wrote, “Brilliant idea.”

Meanwhile, the idea has been lauded by netizens and why not, this step is probably an excellent way to make the best use of the unused space.
