Cuttack: In yet another shocking incident, poachers have allegedly gunned down a tusker and decamped with the ivory at Abhimanpur in Narsinghpur here on Monday night.

The gory incident occurred barely 1.5 km away from the Jadapada forest beat house here. It is suspected that five rounds of bullets have been fired at the elephant. After being informed about the incident, forest officials rushed to the spot but the poachers had fled the scene by then.

Meanwhile, the carcass of the jumbo was sent for post-mortem. The forest officials have sealed the exit points of the forest and began investigating into the case.

Earlier, a 9-year-old female elephant was found dead at Baniabandha forest reserve in Athgarh with burn injuries. It was alleged that the jumbo was burnt to death by miscreants.
