Tension flared up at Abhimanpur village under Narasinghapur block in Cuttack district on Thursday over the death of a youth in a road accident.

The villagers on behalf of the family of the youth, who was crushed to death by a truck while he was dancing to the tunes of DJ music during the Ganesh immersion procession on Wednesday night, staged a roadblock at Abhimanpur Square on the Athgarh-Narasinghapur state highway number 65.

The agitating people demanded compensation for the bereaved family.

According to a source, a Ganesh idol procession was taken out on Wednesday night. Bapi Dehury, son of Karttik Dehury of the village, also participated in the procession. While he was dancing to the tunes of the DJ music, a 10-wheeler that was coming at a great speed hit him, crushing him under the wheels and sped away. Dehury died on the spot.

On Thursday morning, hundreds of villagers laid siege to the state highway 65 and staged a roadblock, demanding compensation to the family. On being informed, a team from Maniabandh police station reached the spot and held discussions with the agitating people. They also seized the truck and detained the driver. Later, the irate villagers withdrew the roadblock.

It is alleged that the deceased while dancing in the procession couldn’t hear the sound of the approaching truck due to the deafening sound of the DJ music and got killed.

A detailed investigation is underway, it was learnt.
