Amidst the threat by the Firemen, Havildars, and drivers of the Fire Services Department, the Odisha Government on Wednesday invoked the ESMA to prohibit the strike.

As per a notification issued by the Home (Special Section) Department, it is necessary to prohibit strikes by Firemen and their supervisory ranks as Fire Services is a vitally necessary service for the community. Any such disruption can cause hardships to people and can lead to loss of life and property.

“Now, therefore, in exercise of the power conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Odisha Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1988 (Odisha Act 9 of 1992), 2 (b) of the said act, the state government do hereby prohibit strikes, as defined vide section 2 (v) of the ESMA Act, 2020 in the aforesaid services,” the notification read.

Such an order shall remain in force for a period of six months.

Earlier, the Firemen, Havildars, and drivers of the Fire Services Department had announced to go on mass leave from February 21 to press for their demands. The association members are demanding salary, allowances, and levels at par with the Odisha Police and registration of their association.
