Fed up with open dumping of waste on roads, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now decided to act tough on violators. BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange on Wednesday said that the process of holding discussions with various associations is currently underway in this regard.

“Yesterday, we had a meeting with the Unit 4 market association in this regard. BMC vehicles will come and collect the garbage. We have urged people not to dump garbage on road. We have decided to take action against the shops and slap penalty for any kind of violation. Their shop will also be closed if needed,” said the BMC Commissioner.

The BMC has also conducted a review of the revenue collection including holding tax, trade license, commercial holding taxes and users fee for sanitation.

“We have found that a lot of people, who have constructed buildings for domestic use, are using it commercially. The BMC is collecting domestic holding tax and there is issue of assessment. The BMC will take up new assessment and reassessment in a campaign mode and a list has been shared with the corporators,” said Kulange.
