The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday lashed out at the state government over the unemployment problem in Odisha.

“Unemployment is assuming alarming proportions in Odisha. Just giving pages of colourful advertisements with tall claims about employment will not remove unemployment,” BJP leader Satyabrata Panda said while addressing a presser here on Thursday.

Quoting a survey done in July-September, 2023 by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the BJP leader observed that giving employment to retired personnel will not be called employment, but it may be political rehabilitation or reward for allegiance.

"This is not employment at all. The state government should know this fact at a time when the unemployment problem is becoming acute," he added.

He pointed out that the report on unemployment was published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Wednesday in which it was stated that the scenario of unemployment in Odisha is alarming.

He added that unemployment among males at the national level is 17.3% while it is 20.9% in the urban areas of Odisha. In the case of women, the unemployment at the national level is 22.9% while it is 31.9% in Odisha, the BJP leader added.

Given such a status of unemployment, Panda alleged that the youths in Odisha are being deprived of their right to employment.

“It is high time that the government focussed on the problem. Organising sports competitions among college students and giving them awards worth Rs 6 lakh or Rs 9 lakh would not solve their unemployment problem,” he said.
