In a bid to let prisoners explore their talent and creativity, a community radio station has been set up in Jharpada jail in Bhubaneswar. The in-house FM radio facility was launched in the jail on the occasion of Prison Formation Day on Saturday.

The move to introduce in-house radio station is an attempt to bring a positive change in the jail atmosphere. The state Prisons Directorate started the radio service that will be managed by the prisoners with some of them playing the role of Radio Jockeys.

As per Prisons DG Manoj Chhabra, the facility will be a medium through which efforts will be made to bring positive changes among the inmates.

“Such radio stations will be a source of entertainment for prisoners and it will reduce their stress besides helping them overcome depression. The concept is also meant to transform the jail as a reform center from a place for punishment,” said Chhabra.

Some inmates have the talent and the in-house radio stations will be managed by them. Along with information, songs and other programmes will be disseminated through the stations,” he added.

In the meantime, libraries have also been opened in many jails across the State. Competition on various arts are being organised to bring positive changes among the prisoners.
