In a tragic incident, an eight-year-old boy was dragged into the river by a crocodile. The horrific accident happened when the boy was playing on the banks of the Mahanadi River in Ghata Sahi under Tikarpada and was suddenly pulled into the river by the crocodile.

According to reports, soon after the incident, locals rushed to the scene to comb the river banks and surrounding areas with the hopes to rescue the child. But despite their rigorous efforts, they only managed to rescue the dead body of the victim. The deceased has been identified as Sameer Naik of Ghata Sahi.

Soon after the news spread, locals were filled with sorrow and anger demanding a thorough investigation. The victim boy’s family and the locals demanded compensation along with a thorough investigation. Forest department officials and local authorities had to de-escalate the situation and pacify the victim’s family, as well as the locals.

Later in the day, the Chief Minister of Odisha expressed his deepest condolences over the incident and declared an ex gratia of Rs 6 lakhs for the family.

Even though the area falls under Satakosia, which is famous for crocodiles and gharials, no such incident was reported in the past. As per sources, the locals are always careful to not go into the crocodile-infested areas. There are dedicated areas which are off limits as they are the breeding grounds of the gharials and fishing is not allowed either, informed sources.
