After Puri Srimandir, the ‘Singhadwara' (Lion Gate) of Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar will be draped with silver plates soon. A decision in this regard was taken during a meeting between servitors of the temple, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials on Tuesday.

According to sources, the main gate of the 11th century shrine got damaged during cyclone Fani in 2019. Since then, the servitors of the temple have been demanding to replace the bronze platting with silver in the new door which is being made by the ASI.

A discussion in this regard was held during the meeting today and the ASI has given its nod for the long-standing demand of the servitors, sources added.

"The Singhadwar of the shrine got damaged during cyclone Fani in 2019. The work for the new doors of the temple is on. We had a discussion with the four nijogs of the temple over the additional things that can be adorned on the new doors," said BMC
Commissioner Sanjay Singh.

"Work for the new doors of the shrine is on and the doors will be installed soon," said Arun Mallick, Superintendent, ASI.

Not only silver cladding, but other important decision on the repair work of the shrine was also discussed during the meeting.

While the lighting arrester on the temple premises is lying defunct, leakages have surfaced in the main temple and other small temples in the premises.

Meanwhile, the BMC has said it will take the demands of the servitors to the notice of the State government.

"An important meeting was held between the servitors, BMC and ASI. I am thankful that CM Naveen Patnaik has directed the BMC to look after the Lingaraj Temple and carry out the renovation works.  The work for the new gate is underway," said Kamalakanta Badu, secretary of Badu Nijog.
