The Odisha government on Friday announced to bear all the transportation expenses which will be incurred in bringing back students and people from the State who are now stranded in war-torn Ukraine. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made this announcement.

The development comes soon after the Chief Minister spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging the latter for the safe evacuation of stranded Odia students and workers in Ukraine.

“The State Government will bear the expenses for bringing back students and workers of Odisha stranded in Ukraine,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said in a release.

As per the decision, the Development Commissioner-cum-Special Relief Commissioner P.K. Jena will coordinate the overall issue regarding the evacuation of the citizens from Odisha. Besides, the Resident Commissioner at New Delhi will be coordinating with the Government of India over this issue.

The State government has also directed the District Administration to collect information on students and workers who are stranded in Ukraine. Focus will be given on effective coordination with their family members at this hour of crisis, the release added.

A Special Assistance Cell has also been made functional at the office of Resident Commissioner of Odisha (New Delhi) to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Civil Aviation and other concerned agencies to ensure safe and early return of the stranded citizens of Odisha from Ukraine.
