A girl student of the National Law University of Odisha (NLUO) in Cuttack was found dead in her hostel room under mysterious circumstances on Monday.  

The deceased has been identified as Surbhi Panchal who hailed from Haryana. 

As per reports, Surbhi came back from home to her hostel after commencement of physical classes a few days earlier. On Monday, her family members tried to contact her over phone. However, after failing to connect her, they informed the hostel authorities. 

The hostel warden went near her room to only find the door locked from inside. Surbhi was found hanging after the hostel warden and others broke open the door. They rushed her to a nearby private hospital where the doctors declared her brought-dead. 

"The deceased hailed from Haryana and was a second year student of Law College. At around 7 pm in the evening, father of the deceased informed the hostel warden about Surbhi not answering his calls. The warden along with others searched everywhere to trace her. They broke into her room at around 8.30 pm and found her hanging from the ceiling fan," Dr Yogesh Pratap Singh, the Registrar of NLUO said.

"Though they immediately rushed to the nearby hospital, the doctor pronounced her dead. Later, we brought the body to SCB and informed the police," Singh added.

As per sources, the law student had suicidal tendencies and was in depression.

In the presence of her family members, post-mortem of the deceased was conducted at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a police team from Phase II police station has launched an investigation into the matter.
