12-hour bandh declared in Odisha's Sindhekela in Bolangir over NAC status demand

A 12-hour bandh is underway in Sindhekela in Bolangir district on Friday as the Nagarik Mancha presses for Notified Area Council (NAC) status for Sindhekela Gram Panchayat under Bangomunda block. The strike, called by the civic group, began this morning and will continue until 6pm, with shops, markets, and business establishments remaining closed.

Protesters have raised the demand for NAC status explicitly based on Sindhekela’s population and civic needs. The Nagarik Mancha says the area fulfils the criteria required for NAC recognition, including the benchmark of 10,000 residents. Agitators insist that formal recognition is necessary to secure urban amenities and development.

Locals allege that Sindhekela was placed on the NAC list during the previous government’s tenure, but that the current administration is not acknowledging the status. This perceived reversal has allegedly prompted the present agitation and the call for a bandh.

Residents emphasise Sindhekela’s strategic location at the junction of Bolangir, Kalahandi, and Nuapada districts. They say the town draws significant traffic and footfall for business and essential services, strengthening the argument for the NAC declaration.
