Chia seeds swell up after they are soaked in water or milk and that is how they are used in all the dishes. However, at times, they can become problematic.

Since chia seeds have loads of fiber, when they are eaten in excess the body finds it difficult to digest them. That is why you should eat a limited portion of chia seeds every day or it may lead to stomach cramps, bloating, and even diarrhoea.

Patients with hypertension should consume chia seeds with caution

Chia seeds have blood-thinning properties as they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. When consumed in excess by patients on medication for hypertension, it can interfere with the medications. That is why if you are taking medicines to keep your blood pressure levels in check, you must consult your health expert before consuming them.

Chia seeds may impact the ability of the gut to absorb sugar

The high fiber content in chia seeds can also cause problems in diabetic patients who are taking insulin or medications to keep their blood sugar levels in control. When you consume chia seeds in excess, it alters the blood sugar level in the body as the fibers interfere with the ability of the gut to absorb sugar.

So should you consume chia seeds and how much?

You can consume chia seeds on a daily basis as it is rich in calcium, zinc, phosphorus, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids. But the consumption should be limited to 1 or 1.5 teaspoons daily. You can just soak them for some time or overnight and consume them in the morning or add them to smoothies or pudding for better texture and fiber.
