Sangati Jogwar

News Highlights

  • Reportedly, SLB's latest movie has been inspired by Raj Kapoor-helmed Sangam.
  • It featured Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in the lead role.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali few days ago announced his upcoming venture with Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal in the lead. While Ranbir made his debut with SLB’s Saawariya, his wife worked on Sanjay’s last hit Gangubai Katlhiawadi. Titled Love and War, the movie is a love story with war as the backdrop.

Reportedly, the movie has been inspired by Raj Kapoor-helmed Sangam which features Rajendra Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, and Raj Kapoor himself in lead roles. Sangam was the tale of two friends who fall in love with the same girl Radha.

Although Radha is in love with Rajendra Kumar aka Gopal, since he never reciprocates his love for Radha, she turns towards Sunder who is also very much in love with her and openly flaunts his love. And that is what is stopping Gopal from proclaiming his love for her as he is a childhood friend of Sunder.

Through ups and downs, Radha marries Sunder and when the latter finds that his wife is in love with his best friend he starts suspecting them both. Ultimately Gopal commits suicide and the movie ends. Sanjay Leela Bhansali may have an entirely different approach towards this love triangle but it would be interesting to watch how the love story between Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal will evolve.

The special Raj Kapoor, Dr. Bali and Vyjayanthimala connection

Many people believe that Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala were also engaged in a passionate affair for a long time and were very close during the making of Sangam. The same has been mentioned by RK's son Rishi Kapoor in his autobiography. They became so close that the Showman’s wife Krishna Kapoor walked out of the house with her children and started staying at a hotel.

On the other side, Dr. Bali who was the family physician of Raj Kapoor fell in love with Vyjayanthimala. He was already a married man with three sons. When things between Raj and the South Indian superstar started waning, Dr. Bali came closer to Vyjayanthimala and the two decided to get married.

The Sangam actress was so eager to marry Dr. Bali that she readily paid the hefty alimony to his wife Ruby to get a divorce and married him finally. It broke the heart of Raj Kapoor who never thought that Vyjayanthimala would betray him. So the making of Sangam and its aftermath has an entirely different love triangle which is equally interesting as the movie itself.
