Bhubaneswar: A retired banker was arrested by Infocity Police in Bhubaneswar on charges of animal cruelty after a video showing him throwing some kittens in front of stray dogs and causing their death went viral on social media.

The accused retired banker was identified as Prahallad Behera, a resident of Prashanti Vihar under Infocity police limits in the Capital City.

As per reports, a video clip containing the footage of CCTV cameras showed the accused throwing kittens which entered his house in front of stray dogs which in no time tore apart their bodies and devoured them.

Sources said Behera threw three kittens, out of which two were eaten by the dogs while another sustained serious injuries.

The arrest was made after an eyewitness lodged a complaint at the police station.

The disturbing video of stray dogs tearing open the body of the kittens on road and devouring them, while the mother cat tried to ward off the hungry dogs, attracted concern from many quarters who demanded stern action against the accused for this heinous act.

It is not for the first time that Bhubaneswar has witnessed such atrocities against animals. In May 2020, a pregnant dog was beaten mercilessly by a woman leaving it in a miserable condition which could hardly move when it was rescued and rushed to the hospital. Despite all attempts, she could not be saved and her two premature puppies who were delivered after a C-Section surgery also succumbed later.
