A man from Ambapalas village under Dhenkanal’s Parjang police limits allegedly killed his wife on Saturday as an offering to God in a tantric ritual.
The deceased has been identified as Mamata Khatua from the same village.
As per reports, Mamata was allegedly killed by her husband Astama Khatua at their home. Later, the accused took her nude body to a nearby forest to perform the tantric ritual on Shivratri today.
Sources said Astama was Mamata’s second husband and she had eloped with him by leaving her first husband and three children.
Asked about the murder, the accused denied his involvement in the crime. “She had already swallowed some tablets by the time I reached home. I brought her grapes to eat. But she did not survive,” the accused claimed.
Astama’s brother Shiva Khatua said, “I do not know how she died. But I know for a fact that Astama practiced tantric puja and performed related rituals.”
As per the police, the couple used to fight regularly and they had a glaring marital dispute in their family.
The Parjang police has reached the spot and launched a probe into the matter.
