The Commissionerate Police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the murder mystery Azad Yadav, a migrant worker from Bihar, whose body was recovered from the Mahanadi river bed near Bhuasuni under Bidanasi police limits in Cuttack on March 3.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Cuttack, Prateek Singh said illicit relationship was the reason behind the murder of Yadav.

The prime accused Munni Lal and his aide Kailash have reportedly been arrested in connection with the murder case. A manhunt is on to nab a contractor, identified as Pankaj, who had allegedly given the contract for the murder. The mystery behind the murder was revealed following the recreation of the crime scene by the arrested accused.

“The deceased was into an illicit relationship with Pankaj’s wife.  He had taken her to Bihar last year. However, following the decision of the Panchayat at his native village both of them came back to Odisha,” said Singh.

Meanwhile, Pankaj nursed a grudge against Yadav and he gave a contract to Munni Lal to eliminate the former. Pankaj also gave him an advance amount of Rs 20,000 and promised to pay Rs 20,000 more upon the execution of the murder, Singh said, adding that Kailash was later roped in by Munni Lal.

“Subsequently Munni Lal called Yadav to a place near Bhuasuni on the pretext of clearing his pending wages. When Yadav reached the place as directed, Munni Lal attacked him with a broken liquor bottle in an inebriated condition. When, Yadav tried to save his life by running away from the place, Munni Lal gave him a chase and killed him by throwing boulders at him,” Singh added.
