Chennai: President Pratibha Patil has expressed grief over the loss of lives and damage to property caused by cyclone `Thane` that hit coastal Tamil Nadu on December 30. "I am saddened to learn about the loss of lives and damage of property caused by Cyclone Thane, which hit some parts of coastal Tamil Nadu..," she said in a letter dated December 31 to Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah.

"I am sure that the state goverment is making all efforts to provide help to families who lost their kin and those whose properties have been damaged," she said while expressing condolences to the bereaved families. Relief operations are in progress in Tamil Nadu`s Cuddalore district and Puducherry which were battered by the cyclonic storm claiming 42 lives and leaving many injured.
