At a time when the Indian Railways has given its passengers a lot of benefits, it has not let down the hopes of the commuters sink when it comes to availing concession while booking train tickets.

Concession is granted only on basic fare of Mail/Express trains irrespective of type of trains, i.e. Mail/Exp or passenger by which the passengers travel. No concession shall be admissible in respect of other charges, viz, superfast charges,reservation charges and safety surcharges, etc.

No concession in rail fare is admissible by Rajdhani/ Shatabdi Express trains, except for senior citizens.

No concession is granted in case of travel by AC Chair car, AC First class & AC 3-tier, except for senior citizens, orthopaedically handicapped, Blind and Mentally retarded persons

Your concessional ticket cannot be changed to a higher class even if you are willing to pay the difference of fare.

No concession is granted for a journey, the cost of which is borne by Central/State Governments/Local bodies/Corporations or Government undertakings.

Some of the concessions are admissible subject to the minimum distance of journey which have been speci fied in the relevant categories.

First class coupon books for press correspondents will be valid in AC classes in accordance with the specific concession entitlement for higher class.

No person or party will be allowed two ar more conces sions at a time.

All concessions are to be granted across the counters/ at stations/reservation office/Booking office only.If some person enters the train without ticket or without proper ticket or extends journey or concession ticket to the higher classes etc. he/she shall not be granted any concession in the train even he/she otherwise eligible for concession under the rule.

Person eligible for concession in First class may travel also in AC-2 tr/Sleeper Class on payment of difference between normal AC-2tr sleeper and first class fare plus First class concessional fare.

Types  of Concession:

The Indian Railways extends passenger fare concessions in as many as 53 categories, which include passengers with disabilities, cancer, thalassemia, heart and kidney patients, war widows students and others.

As per sources, the Indian Railways grants concession in the fares of all classes of Mail/Express/Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi/Duronto group of trains to Male Senior Citizens of minimum 60 years and Female Senior Citizen of minimum 58 years.

The element of concession is 40 per cent for men and 50 per cent for women.

Male Senior Citizens of minimum 60 years and Female Senior Citizen of minimum 58 years can avail senior citizen concession on IRCTC e-ticketing website www.irctc.co.in by providing correct Age and selecting “Avail Concession” option under “Option for Senior Citizen Concession” section of Passenger Details form.
Passengers availing Senior Citizen concession have to carry a proof of age while travelling.

Senior Citizen Passengers eligible for Senior Citizen concession who wish to opt out of the concession fully OR some part and contribute towards Nation Development may book their tickets without the concession element.

To book tickets without Senior Citizen concession, such passengers can select “Forgo Full Concession” option under “Option for Senior Citizen Concession” section of Passenger Details form.

To book tickets with 50 per cent of Senior Citizen concession, such passengers can select “Forgo 50% Concession” option under “Option for Senior Citizen Concession” section of Passenger Details form.
