While many of us have regular milk for breakfast every morning, there are a few people who cannot. With veganism on the rise, many people look for alternatives to animal based products and dairy. For such people there are many options available like coconut milk, rice milk, soy milk and one of these is almond milk which has grown in popularity in recent years and is now widely available in most supermarkets.

What is Almond Milk?

Almond milk, as the name implies, is made from almonds. Almond milk is available from a variety of commercial brands, but it can also be made at home. Commercial almond milk has the advantage of being fortified with vitamins and minerals, and it comes in a variety of delicious flavours.

Low in Sugar and Lactose-Free

Almond milk contains very little sugar by nature. This makes it an excellent choice for diabetics as well. A glass of almond milk contains only 1-2 grams of carbohydrates, which are primarily dietary fibre. However, flavouring milk contains a lot of sugar, so read the label carefully before purchasing the product. Another significant benefit of almond milk is that it is naturally lactose-free, making it ideal for people who are lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance occurs when people are unable to digest lactose, a natural sugar found in milk. It is caused by a lack of lactase, the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of lactose in the body.

Ideal for Vegans

Vegans are individuals who do not consume dairy or meat products. Many people have embraced the popular vegan diet in recent years. Though going vegan is a personal choice, most people miss the milk they had for breakfast or in their favourite milkshake. Almond milk is suitable for vegans because it is made from nuts.

Almond milk is a versatile product that works well as a dairy substitute for vegans and those who are allergic or intolerant to dairy.
