The Odisha government has decided to introduce National Cadet Corps (NCC) as an elective subject for the under graduate students in 183 colleges of the state. NCC course will be included in the Plus 3 curriculum in Odisha from the 2023-24 academic session.

Vice Chairperson of State Council of Higher Education Council Ashoka Kumar Das said, “As NCC develops perspective and leadership qualities and is a good preparation for a value based living among students, the Odisha government has decided that the option of NCC will be given at UG level to all students as a generic elective option.”

At present, NCC is mostly based on practical and field theory classes in colleges with one trained officer in Odisha.

According to Das, NCC will now be in the list of electives for students and NCC Directorate of Odisha will provide some guest faculties for imparting education on the course. After completion of the regular internal and semester exams, NCC will be mentioned as a subject in the certificates awarded to the students.

“As NCC Odisha has limited capacity to take students, gradually efforts will be taken to train two teachers each and depending on the response from students, we will decide on the next course of action. The NCC elective course will be of 24 credits,” Das informed.

Das further stated that RD Women’s University has already implemented and a committee has been formed to look into various aspects including course syllabus.

“From 2013, we have been offering 12 credit NCC course, and from this year we have increased to 24 credits. We have been entrusted with the responsibility to prepare the course curriculum for entire Odisha for NCC elective course. We are already prepared and colleges can implement it after approval from the council,” said Aparajita Choudhry, vice-chancellor of RD Women’s University.
