WCD ministers brother resigns from committee

Bhubaneswar: A day after opposition parties criticised his membership of state level monitoring committee for mid-day meal scheme, brother of state Women and Child Development Minister, Pramila Mallick on Friday resigned from the 20-member panel.

"I have resigned from the monitoring committee in order to prevent any further controversy on the issue, which was unnecessarily given a political colour," said Khirod Chandra Mallick, the minister`s brother.

Mallick, founder president of leading NGO BISWA, said his membership of the committee had nothing to do with his sister`s ministership as he was part of the panel for the commendable work being done by his organisation.

He said he wanted to concentrate on the work of his NGO and remain away from any controversy.

The issue of his membership of the monitoring committee was raised yesterday by senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra who alleged that a Rs 700 crore scam had taken place in the procurement and supply of pulses for mid-day meal and similar other schemes being implemented by WCD department.

It was improper for the minister`s brother to be in the committee which was entrusted with the task of monitoring supply of Dal besides ensuring that procedures were followed in purchase of pulses for MDM, Mohapatra said.
