Youth dies, family alleges torture by cops during detention

Sambalpur: Mystery shrouds the death of a youth almost a week after he was detained by police in connection with violence during Biswakarma puja on September 17.

The deceased has been identified as Biswanath Behera of Kalupada of Hirakud town.

The family of the victim, Biswanath, allege he was subjected to torture and was beaten up by the police.

Though the cops had released Biswanath after detaining him the next day,  he complained of severe pain yesterday and was immediately rushed to the Hirakud hospital where he died, family members alleged.

“The youth was brought to the hospital at around 5: 35 pm and he was received dead,” said Medical-Officer-in-Charge, Dr. SS. Sahu.
