Dental surgeon-turned-politician Manik Saha, who became Chief Minister on May 15, a day after Deb resigned, and was elected to the Assembly in the June 23 by-elections, resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 4, causing the vacancy.
Notably, three BJD seats, which will fall vacant on July 1, are presently held by Prasanna Acharya, N. Bhaskar Rao and Sasmit Patra, all leaders from the ruling party.
It is discussed in the political circle that Kalikesh Singh Deo, Pushpendra Singh Deo, Chairman of Western Odisha Development Council Asit Tripathy, OTDC Chairperson Shreemayee Mishra, Raseswari Panigrahi, Jogesh Singh, Nalini Pradhan and Prabhas Singh are the contenders from Western Odisha.
The term of office of 57 members of the Council of States elected from as many as 15 states is due to expire on their retirement between June-August this year.
