From a gathering of 400 physically challenged athletes from 23 countries at Rome in 1960 to 4,400 participants from 137 countries at Tokyo, the Paralympic Games have come a long way in the last 61 years.
Special Olympics is a competition for people with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, it promotes itself is an inclusion movement using sport, health, education and leadership programs to end discrimination against and empower people with intellectual disabilities.
