The Tamil Nadu government on Monday (Sept 13) passed a bill to scrap the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for the state’s medical aspirants. Under the Bill, instead of the exam, these students will be provided admissions into undergraduate medical courses based on Class 12 marks.
The plea contended that petitioners and similarly affected candidates were shocked to note the reservation in 15 per cent UG and 50 per cent PG All India Quota seats (MBBS/BDS and MD/MS/MDS), which comes into effect from the current academic session 2021-22.
NEET was earlier scheduled to be held on August 1. However, following the rise in the Coronavirus cases in the country, the exam was cancelled. Around 16 lakh students have registered for the exam this year.
The doctors, having Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS) degree, had appeared in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-MDS conducted on December 16 last year by the National Board of Examination (NBE) for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery (MDS) course.
