Nashik: A female leopard in Baglan taluka of the district ate one of her own cubs and injured three others, who were caged in a sugarcane field here, forest officials said today.
Four newly born cubs were found in the agriculture field at Joran-Shivar recently and were kept in a cage by the forest department for safety while another cage was kept ready to trap their mother, they said.
The female leopard who was in search of her cubs was trapped on Monday. Seeing her cubs in a nearby cage on the field she pulled out one of them and ate it, forest official Subhash Nagare said.
It also attacked three other cubs in the cage, he said. The mother and the three cubs were later released into the Dodheshwar forests on Tuesday on the directives of Malegaon`s sub-divisional forest officer U D Sonawane, Nagare said.
