GST relief: Centre directs sellers to revise MRPs on packaging of all goods
Following the recent reduction in GST rates, the central government has issued a directive mandating the display of revised prices on all goods. The move requires manufacturers, packers, and importers to clearly indicate the updated maximum retail price (MRP) on products, even for items already purchased or packaged before the GST adjustment.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has written to all state governments outlining the instructions. According to the circular, goods manufactured, packed, or imported before the GST revision must carry the revised MRP to reflect the reduced tax rate.
Odisha Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department Minister Krushna Chandra Patra emphasised that the new MRP should be implemented either by the end of December this year or until the existing stock is sold out.
According to sources, the essential items, which have been packed till December 31, 2025, have the old MRP. However, with the slash in GST, the new rates will come into effect from September 22. So the Centre has directed the sellers to update the MRP on the packaging.
Besides, those who have purchased the items before the announcement of the GST slash, the centre will provide them necessary compensation, sources added.
The directive specifically instructs that old prices should not be left on any items; the revised price must be clearly displayed to ensure transparency and prevent consumer confusion.
