Baripada: Hundreds of tribals on Tuesday blocked Kolkata-Chennai national highway in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district demanding Rs 50 lakh compensation and free treatment for a gang-rape victim.

The traffic was disrupted on the highway near Dantiamuha village as the tribals sat there for about three hours to press for their demands.

They, however, withdrew the blockade after local officials assured them that their demands would be conveyed to the state government.

Six men had allegedly gang-raped a 25-year-old tribal woman after tying up her husband when she came to the district hospital here on Sunday.

The accused, who are between 19 and 33 years of age, have been remanded in jail custody today after their bail petitions were rejected by the court.
