Puri: Puri district administration today issued a notice to the owners of Malaysian cargo ship Jin Hwa32 for removing the stranded cargo vessel lying defunct at Rajhans beach in Chilika lake.
As per reports, the owners of the cargo ship have been asked to extract all the oil including the engine lubricant from the ship within two days and shift the ship away from the eco-sensitive waters of Chilika within seven days.
Balwant Singh, the District Collector of Puri said, "The staff of the cargo vessel are using a 700 metre long pipe to extract oil from the ship and we are hopeful that the task will be completed within the next two to three days."
Reportedly, a Bangladeshi team which was stationed at Chandipur has been roped in to remove the oil from the ship. They have already laid the 700 metre long pipe to drain all the oil for transport to Satapada through Chillika by a boat. The extraction process is underway since yesterday.
It has been a month since the Malaysian cargo ship enroute to Vishakhapatnam developed a technical snag and landed on the shores of Chilika.
The Indian Coast Guard had written a letter to the owner of the vessel and Odisha government citing that the ship which is loaded with fuel and lubricants, posed a threat to eco-sensitive Chilika lake.
On the flip side tourists and onlookers are gathering around Rajhans Island to witness the oil extraction process turning Jin Hwa into a tourist interest.
