Kendrapara: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to next of kin of the victim and financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to each person who was injured during the boat capsize incident in Mahanadi river mouth near Nipania in Kendrapara earlier this month.

The Office of the Prime Minister has issued a directive to the collector of Kendrapara to furnish the total fund requirement along with list incorporating the names of the deceased, their next of kin and seriously injured persons with their complete postal address.

Since the compensation amount will be disbursed through State/district administration, the PMO has also asked the concerned authorities to send the bank account details of the payee to facilitate transfer of fund from the National Relief Fund through RTGS or NEFT.

This apart, Jagatsinghpur collector has also been intimated in this connection since most of the victims of the mishap hailed from the coastal district.

It may be noted that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had earlier announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to next of kin of deceased and free medical treatment to the injured.

Nine persons including two women and seven children, all residents of Hasina village in Kujang area of Jagatsinghpur, were killed after the boat ferrying them capsized near Nipania ghat on January 2. A day after the incident, another dead body was also fished out from the spot taking the death toll to 10. As many as 20 other persons were injured during the incident.

Around 55 passengers were returning after a New Year picnic at the Light House at Hukitola island in the Mahanadi river when the mishap occurred.
