Berhampur: A five-year-old child died of diarrhoea at Bramhanachhai village under the cyclone and flood ravaged Sheragada block in Ganjam district, while ten others suffered from the water-borne disease.
"The parents of the deceased boy did not inform the medical officers after he suffered from the disease, even though a mobile health unit was present in the area," said L K Rath, the assistant district medical officer.
Instead of taking their child to the medical staff present in the area on Sunday last, the parents gave medicine to the boy from a quack, he said.
"We have sent an additional medical team to the village to assess the situation and to advise the villagers to take preventive steps to control the spread of the disease," Rath said.
Though some sporadic diarrhoea cases were reported from different cyclone and flood-affected areas in the district, there was no epidemic-like situations anywhere, he claimed.
"We have taken all precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of epidemic. Mobile health units have been deployed and water sources have been disinfected, Rath said.
Meanwhile, a two-member central medical team, expert on public health toured the natural calamities-affected areas of the district, he added.
