Cuttack: More than 300 house surgeons working in the three government medical teaching hospitals of Orissa served an ultimatum to the government on Friday threatening to launch indefinite cease work if their monthly stipend is not hiked by Monday.

`We will boycott all hospital duties from Monday if our monthly stipend is not hiked from the present Rs 8640 to at least Rs 15,000 retrospectively at par with house surgeons elsewhere in the country,` the house surgeon associations of the medical colleges said.

SCB medical college house surgeon association president Snehanshu Dey said the associations in Cuttack Berhampur and Burla had submitted memoranda to their respective hospital superintendents in November last year demanding hike in their stipend. Since the government did not pay attention to their demands, they were forced to resort to the agitation.
