Bhubaneswar: At least five people have been detained by police in Koraput district in connection with a landmine blast that killed four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel yesterday at the Sunki Ghat near Pottangi, said sources.

BSF personnel have also intensified their combing operations to nab the culprits, sources added.

"We conducted review meetings on security arrangements in which IG (operations), BSF and CRPF officials were present. Our effort is going on to chase the culprits. Besides, we are also analysing larger issues,” said Abhay, ADG (Intelligence).

Meanwhile, a guard of honour was given today to the deceased BSF personnel at a function in Vishakapatnam of Andhra Pradesh in presence of senior security officials.

Besides killing four BSF personnel, the lanmine blast injured three others. Seriously injured constables - Sirajulla and Mahender - were being treated at SevenHills Hospital in Visakhapatnam while the other was undergoing treatment at Koraput hospital, sources added.

The blast occurred on NH 26 at a culvert between Sakirai and Kauguntha villages near Ralegada of Sunki ghat under Pottangi police station limits around 9 a.m yesterday. The BSF personnel were on their way in three vehicles to Visakhapatnam from Balimela area of Malkangiri district to board trains. Each vehicle was carrying seven personnel.

Sources said their vehicles were first fired at by ultras hiding on a nearby hill. The BSF personnel fired back. However, their third vehicle was blasted while crossing the culvert.
