Jajpur: After a long wait of five years, a minor boy who lost one of his hands in a mishap that occurred in a rice mill in Jajpur district received over Rs 9 lakh compensation.

The owner of Krupalu Rice Industries Private Limited under Panikoili police limits in the district handed over a sum of Rs 9, 37,838 as compensation to the claimant, Chandan Kumar Sahu.

In 2005, the right hand of the minor boy got severed while working in the rice mill. However, the rice mill owner neither provided compensation to the boy nor helped him in providing treatment. Instead, the mill owner allegedly disengaged him from the work.

Later, a case was registered in the Jajpur Road judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) court. Similarly, another case was also registered at Panikoili police station.

Taking due note of the findings from the probe into the case, the JMFC Court ordered the rice mill owner, Anirudha Das to give compensation to the minor boy.

The rice mill owner handed over a cheque of Rs 9, 37,838 as retrospective compensation to the boy in presence of district labour officer recently.

Meanwhile, district child protection committee legal cell officer visited the boy’s house and collected details of the case. The official said that action will be taken against the rice mill owner for engaging the minor boy in work.
