Bhubaneswar: Higher Education Minister Badrinarayan Patra on Wednesday warned that the college and university authorities have been empowered to cancel the student union polls in respective institutions in case of anti-poll activities beyond their controlling limits.

“No anti-election activities will be allowed in any of the institutions. They (college authorities) can cancel the poll process at any moment if they feel so” Patra said after the state government announced notification for the polls which will be held across the state on October 19 for academic session 2012-13.

As per the government order, the aspirants can file their nomination papers on October 12 between 9 am and 12 noon. While the scrutinisation will be conducted on October 13, candidates can withdraw their candidature on the same day and final list of the aspirants contesting for various posts will be published at 5 pm.

All the universities and government colleges through the notification have been instructed to conduct the ‘what I stand for’ meeting on October 18 where the candidates who have made into the final list of contesting aspirants will address the students to claim the respective union posts.

The election will be held through secret ballot on October 19 between 8 am and 2 pm followed by counting from 2 pm to 6 pm, the notification said. Winners will be declared on the same day and they will take oath the next day.
