Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway (ECoR) carried out a drive against spitting in railway stations under its jurisdiction and has collected fine of Rs 3790 from 46 passengers since Monday, ECOR sources said on Thursday.

Spitting in railway stations is punishable and a fine of Rs 100 would be collected at A1 class stations like Bhubaneswar, Puri and Visakhapatnam, Rs 50 at A class stations like Bhadrak, Berhampur, Cuttack, Jajpur-Keonjhar Road, Khurda Road, Palasa, Rayagada, Srikakulam Road, Vizianagaram and Sambalpur and Rs 30 will be charged at rest of the stations under ECOR jurisdiction, the sources said.

As per rules no person will litter in any Railways premises or cook, bath, spit, urinate, defecate, feed animals/birds, repair or wash vehicles, wash utensils/clothes or any other objects. Also none would be allowed to keep any type of storage in any railway premises or paste and put up any poster or write and draw anything in any compartment, carriage of railways or premises without any lawful authority.

This apart, anyone found indulging in defacing Railway property in station buildings, platforms, railway tracks and other property belonging to Railways including trains would be fined, the sources said.

Station managers, ticket collectors of commercial department or equivalent rank of operating department, RPF and officials authorized by Railways have been instructed to have strict vigil over this.

Instructions have also been given to the station managers to maintain cleanliness at station premises and empowered to slap fine as per the provision, the added.
