Bhubaneswar: Amidst strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act, Director General of Odisha Police BK Sharma on Friday directed all the Superintendents of Police to launch a new drive to put a check on drunken driving across Odisha.

Implementing a directive of Supreme Court's road safety committee, DGP Sharma has directed the SPs to strictly conduct checking at 14 toll gates and arrest offenders.

As per the circular issued by the DGP, police personnel have been directed to conduct breath analyser and medical tests at the toll gates.

"Many people are dying due to drunken driving. So to control it Odisha police has begun a new initiative. Police personnel will be deployed in as many as 14 toll gates and will use breath analyser for checking. If anyone is caught driving after consuming alcohol more than the permissible limits, the person will be arrested," said Sharma.

The DGP added that the police officers deployed for checking will be under CCTV surveillance so that any lapse can be dealt with strictly.

"We are ensuring that only trained police personnel conduct the checking at toll gates," DGP Sharma added.
