Cuttack: 'Farmer suicides' continue unabated in the State as one more farmer allegedly committed suicide in Kolanpur village under Nischintakoili block of Cuttack district today.

Family members alleged that the farmer, identified as Sumant Mallick committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house. He was under mental stress over the past few days as he was unable to repay loans taken from moneylenders, claimed family members.

“He had taken loans from moneylenders for agricultural purposes. But he was unable to repay following which lenders used to frequently visit home asking for money. So he was under mental pressure,” said Jhuni Sahu, wife of the deceased farmer.

“My brother had taken loans from moneylenders and committed suicide after he was unable to pay,” said brother of the deceased.

Sources said Mallick and his wife used to have frequent quarrels over their loans.
