Bhubaneswar: As the general elections-2014 are coming closer, the ruling BJD and opposition Congress have resorted to padayatra politics to reach people in a bid to strengthen their electoral base.

The ruling BJD has launched a statewide padayatra programme on Wednesday coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti celebrations while the Congress has decided to start its drive in the current month.

Accompanied by senior leaders like MP Prasanna Patsani, party vice-president Surya Narayan Patra, all three MLAs of Bhubaneswar and other leaders, Chief Minister and party supremo Naveen Patnaik kicked off the mass contact drive called Jan Sampark Padayatra at Unit-VI in Bhubaneswar today. It would culminate on October 11 marking the birth anniversary of Jay Prakash Narayan.

The aim of the programme was to make people aware of the achievements of BJD government during the past 13 years and to inform people about the central negligence towards Odisha, BJD sources said.

Similarly, the State Congress has decided to retaliate the ruling party through same formula by launching a similar padayatra in the current month. PCC president Jayadev Jena informed about programme while launching a padayatra today at Jananta Maidan in the city on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

“The party will launch a 33-day state wide padayatra, which will begin from Laxmananath of Mayurbhanj and to culminate at Girisola covering a distance of 500 km”, Jena said, adding “the party men will tell the people during the journey that how the Naveen Patnaik government failed to utilise the central funds properly and to tackle poverty in the state”.
