Balasore: In what appears to be a case of medical negligence, family members of a minor boy accused a lady doctor posted at Gopi Kishan Bhatta Health Centre here of declaring their child dead while he was still alive. The deceased is a 11-year-old boy, Sheikh Haleem, son of Sheikh Babula of Rajpur village under Jaleswar police limits.

As per sources, the minor boy was admitted to the health centre today in a critical condition, but was taken back home soon after the doctor declared him dead. The family members however later claimed that the boy was still alive, stating that he was breathing and that they discovered body movement.

The child was again rushed to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) where the doctors confirmed about his death.

Reportedly, the matter came to the fore after the family along with other villagers ransacked the property of Gopi Kishan hospital apart from destroying all documents alleging medical negligence. Not only this, the irate locals staged a road blockade and even allegedly pelted stones at the house of the on-duty doctor.

Though the lady doctor could not be contacted over the issue, another senior doctor Ganesh Chandra Palo has stated that local villagers instigated the family members to resort to violence. "The on-duty doctor was not sure about the patient's condition. When I checked after five minutes, the child was already dead," said Palo.

Palo further stated that the on-duty doctor had actually referred the child to the District Headquarters Hospital fearing any untoward incident and possible violence. He, however, was clueless when reporters asked him about the decision to refer a dead child to the DHH.

IIC of Jaleswar PS, Pradip Majhi who rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, said, "The minor boy was admitted to the hospital this morning. His family members along with the locals staged a road blockade alleging negligence by the doctor. We are looking into the matter."

In a similar case reported in March earlier this year, an alive man was allegedly declared dead by a doctor and sent for post-mortem at Bhadrak district headquarters hospital. The patient, Sujit Khatua of Khatuapatna village under Dhusuri Police limits, gained consciousness while being taken for autopsy.
