Bolangir: Less than a week after an encounter in Saraikela PS area of Bolangir district in which a Maoist was killed, security forces on Friday gunned down one Red rebel during a major gun battle in Khaprakhol area of the district.

Official sources said, few more extremists are suspected to have been injured in the exchange of fire.

“Acting on a tip off, we launched a combing operation in the morning with the CRPF jawans and traced a camp in the area. As soon as the rebels felt our presence, they opened indiscriminate and unprovoked firing on our personnel. But our forces strongly retaliated,” DIG (Northern range) Sanjay Kumar told OTV adding that the body of a Maoist has been recovered from the area.

The official informed that soon after the gun battle, a search operation has been launched in the Paikamal area to nab other members of the group.

“We suspect the camp was a permanent set up to train the Red guerillas,” he added.

According to top officials, 3-4 Naxal groups are still active in the Balangir, Bargarh, Nuapada exit areas and are planning to launch a co-ordinated attack on security camps.
