Jajpur: A student of a government run high school in Sukinda block of the district was allegedly beaten up by a teacher, officials said here on Thursday.

Biswabhusan Makakuda, a class 9 student of Sramashakti Uccha Vidyapitha here, sustained injuries on Tuesday after a science teacher allegedly beat him up for failing to answer questions correctly in the class.

The incident came to light after the mother of the student lodged a complaint with Jajpur District Education Officer (DEO) and others on Wednesday, officials said.

According to the complaint lodged with DEO, School authorities and Mass Education Department in Bhubaneswar, Makakuda was beaten up by science teacher, Dhruba Charan Mallik with bamboo stick when he failed to give correct answers to some questions put to him in the class.

He received injuries on his hand and leg and was admitted to the local hospital, her mother claimed. "I was away from the school on that day as I had gone to attend the head masters` conference, convened by the DEO at Danagadi. The incident is unfortunate," said Khetrabasi Barik, head master of the school.

Jajpur DEO, Kapilendra Mishra said he had sought a report from the head master of the school on allegations that a student was beaten up by a teacher. "I have asked the head master of the school to submit a detailed report on the allegation. Once I get the report, I will take appropriate action," he said.
