Bhubaneswar: Regular classes of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur, for the current academic session would begin from July this year.

A decision to this effect was taken at a high level meeting presided over by chief secretary AP Padhi at the State Secretariat here on Thursday.

Principal secretary, Skill Development and Technical Education, Laxmi Narayan Gupta outlined the issues for discussion while Director, IISER, Vinod Kumar Singh presented an update on the work so far.

Joint Secretary Ministry of Human Resource Development, Reena Soonal and Ganjam collector Prem Chandra Choudhury joined the meeting through video conferencing from Delhi and Ganjam respectively.

The meeting decided that the institute would function from a transit accommodation in the IIT campus of Berhampur for the time being. The Academic cum Administrative building of IIT would be made available to IISER as its temporary campus.

The chief secretary assured the IISER authorities of all infrastructure facilities like quality power supply, road connectivity and water supply and asked the secretary, Roads and Building, Nalini Kanta Pradhan and the Ganjam collector to expedite the construction of the road connecting the site.

The Ganjam collector said around 200 acres of land had been identified at Loudigam for the permanent campus of IISER, which has been approved by IISER authorities.

The chief secretary directed the Ganjam collector to complete demarcation of the land and construction of the boundary wall before handing it over to IISER and requested the IISER authorities to submit the requisition for land as per the prescribed norms.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, the IISER director said around 50 students would be admitted during July, 2016. He said there would be hostel facilities for both boys and girls.

He also thanked the state government for providing all necessary support and assistance to start teaching and learning from the current academic session.
