Bhubaneswar: Based on the directions of the Supreme Court, road safety rules will be enforced strictly and tough action will be taken against violators in Bhubaneswar starting from today.
In pursuance of the directive of the apex court, violators will be intercepted on road by the Police and Transport department authorities and will be issue challans against violators for the first time.
Using mobile phone while driving, over-speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, illegal parking are among the offences which will attract strict action and challans will be issued against the violators.
One copy of the challan will be sent to the violator while another one will be given to the transport office. Subsequently, the transport office will send a penalty receipt on the address of the registered vehicle, said sources.
The penalty could span from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000. In case of repeat offenders, licenses of violators could be cancelled for three months, added sources.
“As per the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety headed by former Justice KS Radhakrishnan, the guidelines are being implemented in all the States. In this regard, a meeting between the Police commissioner and Transport commissioner was held recently. As decided in the meeting, persons violating road safety norms in terms of over-speeding, signal jumping, drunken driving, using mobile phones while driving, overloading of goods vehicles, and carrying passengers in goods vehicles will be issued challans. Police have been given powers in certain cases where they can issue challans and send it to us. Upon receipt of such challans, the transport department will penalize the violators,” said Bhubaneswar-II RTO, Sanjay Kumar Behera.
