Bhubaneswar: The Private Bus Owners’ Association of Odisha on Sunday called for a bus strike from December 1 protesting against plying of the JNNURM buses outside the cities.

The Association demanded the city buses should ply within the cities, not connecting one city with the other.

Besides, the Association has also protested against the State government’s decision to hike tax.

At present, the JNNURM buses are running in major cities of the State.

Talking to mediapersons here, general secretary of the Private Bus Owners’ Association Debendra Kumar Sahu said, “The State government has increased taxes on all kinds of passenger buses. It has become impossible for us to run buses without increase in fares.”

The decision of the Association will be communicated to the State government tomorrow, Sahu added.
With a demand not to increase taxes, the Association had submitted memorandums to Chief Minister, Transport Minister, Chief Secretary, Transport Secretary on September 14.

“Though one month has passed, the demands are yet to be met. Besides, the government did not do anything for development of the bus stands,” he stated.
